Four Tips for a Successful First-time Camping Trip
The better you prepare beforehand, the more you’ll enjoy a smooth and memorable camping experience. These four tips are designed with first-time campers in mind.
Tip One: Start with a Shorter Trip
If this is your first camping trip, keep it short and simple. Now is not the time to venture out into the wild for a month-long expedition. Instead, plan a short trip close to home.
Think of it as a trial run. It’ll give you a chance to learn how to set everything up in an environment that’s already somewhat familiar to you. You’ll learn what works, what doesn’t, and what you can do differently next time for a better experience.
Tip Two: Make Lists
Some of the most successful camping trips involve lists that you add to and perfect over time. What sorts of lists should you make? Start with these:
- Camping equipment, essentials, and accessories to bring
- Easy meals and snacks—list all the individual ingredients, plus cooking and eating utensils, as well as beverages
- Personal items—clothing layers, toiletries, sunscreen, bug spray, medications, hearing aids, extra glasses, inhalers, and anything else you consider essential
- Recreational items—what activities do you plan to do while camping?
Bonus Tip: During your first trip, create a list of the steps to take to set up camp in the most efficient way. Also, update your other lists with anything you may have missed.
Tip Three: Pack Efficiently and Essentially
You’re not going on a luxury cruise, so leave your fancy stuff at home. Pack efficiently—you don’t want to lug around anything you really don’t need—but make sure to include the essentials, like these:
- First aid kit
- Sturdy shoes
- Layered clothing
- Waterproof clothing
- Extra socks
- A fire starter—the company Zippo makes some great lighters
- Swiss army knife
- Hand sanitizer
You’re going to be outdoors, so bring items that are durable and that will protect you from the elements—don’t forget your hat.
Tip Four: Understand Campground Rules
Wherever you go to camp, whether it’s a private campground or a state park, there are guidelines you’ll need to familiarize yourself with before going.
If there’s anything you don’t understand, contact the campground directly and ask. It’s better to know the rules beforehand than to be surprised when you arrive.
Also, know what amenities are available. For example, will you have access to electric hookups on your site? Does the camp have running water? Are there onsite shower facilities? The more you know, the better you can prepare.
